Future of Weir Cottages to be considered

14 August, 2007

British Waterways is to consider the future of three dilapidated Weir Cottages at Beeston Lock.

The three disused cottages, which are in a bad state of repair, stand on the edge of the lock, near to where the canal meets the River Trent.

British Waterways undertook a survey of the cottages in 2006 and is currently reviewing their future.

"Something needs to be done"

Kim Dale, Business Development Manager for British Waterways, said: “We are aware that the cottages have been derelict for a while and that something needs to be done.

“As part of the 2006 survey of the cottages, we asked local riverside users for their opinion.

“People were keen to see the cottages brought back into use, maybe as a pub or a café, or perhaps converted into holiday cottages.

“We are open to suggestions but people need to be aware that the cottages will require significant investment to bring them back into a useable state.”
