Beeston is a good shopping town, with lots of brand names as well as some more unusual and bespoke shops. There are also a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants.
Development of the town centre is ongoing and parking is free!
Other attractions include the Manor House, which was built in the mid 16th Century by Nicholas Streys III.
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist was erected in 1843 and is built on the site of a former church, from which the font, still remains and is thought to date from around 1230. In the church yard there is a Crimean War Memorial and the former plague hole, which was used to bury 138 plague victims!
Beeston began to grow in the early part of the 19th Century when it developed as a silk weaving centre.
The first silk mill was burned down in the Reform Bill riots of 1831 – the same year as Nottingham Castle suffered the same fate.
After the decline of the silk industry the mills became the home of light industry.
In 1901 the National Telephone Company ltd established a factory in Beeston which was taken over by L M Ericsson Manufacturing Company Ltd in 1903.
The site and company continued to expand and in the 1980’s it became Plessey and was a major employer. Plessey became GPT and the site is now occupied by Siemens and Ericsson.
Beeston is also the home to the world famous Boots, which has its headquarters to the southeast of the town.
And…in case you didn’t know…. For around 20 years between 1880 and 1900 Thomas Humber and Partners produced bicycles then motor-cycles and cars from a factory at the junction of Queens Road and Humber Road and employed 2,000 workers. However in 1907 they moved all production to Coventry!
