Toton been in existence since Norman times although little is known of its history. It is thought the town grew due to the Toton Traction Maintenance Depot known locally as Toton Sidings.
The siding was a substantial marshalling yard of Midland Railway, where coal from the Nottinghamshire Coal Field would be sorted before being sent to the rest of the UK.
It is one of the largest rail depots in the UK and since the privatisation of the rail network has been the home of freight trains used by British industry and remains a very popular site for railway enthusiasts.
St Peter’s Church
This Church stands on the site of a Church School, erected by Dame Caroline Warren of Stapleford Hall, and wife of Sir John Borlase Warren, in the nineteenth century. It provided an education for 20 girls and 20 boys.
It continued as a Church School, run by the Trustees of the Dame Warren Educational Foundation, until 1936, when it had become too small for the growing numbers of school children.
